The Bindery in Rochester, Kent specialises in the printing and binding of small quantities of books. They will often take apart a rare 17th or 18th century book to scan each page and painstakingly reprint a facsimile edition. A more recent but particularly well known facsimile is of the South Polar Times. This was a monthly newspaper written and compiled by the crew of the 'Discovery' under Captain Scott on their expeditions to the Antarctic between 1902 and 1911.
One of the printers used by the Bindery is a Xerox Phaser 7300 colour laser printer and Roderick Smith chooses to use refill toner from TonerTopUp (www.TonerTopUp.co.uk) for the colours. He reckons that he saves about two thirds of the cost of the cartridges by refilling them and over the past two years has bought 25 fewer Xerox cartridges costing over £170 each. “The refill toner is good stuff!”, he says “We can refill the cartridges at least five times and it is very easy as there is a filler plug on the cartridge. We are used to topping up the toner on our copiers anyway. The saving means we won’t be priced out of the market.”

Along side the cost saving, Roderick is also acutely aware that each cartridge he does not buy means one less is made using less plastic and other materials and one less is disposed of. “I suppose they could be recycled but I think that most get thrown away and end up in landfill.” He appreciates the environmental benefit from refilling them.
